Inaugural Gold Coast Vinnies CEO Sleepout® launch addresses homelessness in our city
More than 1300 Gold Coasters are homelessness every night – and Gold Coast mother of three Fiona Etherington was one of them before being helped by a live-in Vinnies’ support centre for homeless single parents and their children.
Her powerful and compelling story is being shared as inspiration at the launch of the Gold Coast Vinnies CEO Sleepout®, to be held for the first time in the city on 23 June 2016.
Fiona will join St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) Queensland CEO Peter Maher, among other high profile participants to call on the city’s leaders to sleep out for one night, so someone else doesn’t have to sleep out every night.
With a goal of raising $250,000, money from the Sleepout will go towards a new Homeless Prevention Centre on the Gold Coast, where people can access assistance, support and referral services, including a showering and/or laundry facilities
Joining Fiona is Titans CEO Graham Annesley who is among the list of community, business and political leaders, along with public figures — who will be sleeping out in the cold on 23 June.
Karen Phillips, the Gold Coast’s first female event ambassador, will be joined at the Sleepout by leading Gold Coast names including ambassador Rob Molhoek MP, Councillor William Owen-Jones, Sunland Group’s Soheil Abedian, Maylake Pty Ltd Lorraine Lovatt, Titan’s Graham Annesley and Scott Prince, Hickey Lawyers’ Tony Hickey and James Frizelles Auto’ Rebecca Frizelle among many others.
On the Gold Coast, according to ABC’s published Fact File, statistics show more than 1300 people are homeless each night, including people who are sleeping rough, in supported accommodation for the homeless, boarding houses, and other temporary lodgings. Each night, another 19,838 Queenslanders have no place to call home.
In 2014/15, around 139 homeless single parents and their children were assisted through St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland’s Families Back on Track program. St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland assisted another 35,442 Gold Coast people with emergency relief, home visitation and at support centres, among these 16,638 children ages 0-16 years.
We are looking forward to participating next year : -)
